Religion

Interview studies suggest that religion does play a role in the motivation of FGM as part of the prophets’ “sunna” or religious duty. 10 However neither the bible nor the Koran endorses the practice. Religious pressure is used as an excuse to perform FGM. Islam and the Sharia code actually prohibits cutting of female organs.

“From very early parents tell their children about FGM, as they explain to them that it is part of our religion and if they do not get circumcised they will not be good Muslims. As such they convince the younger generations to getting circumcised”
