The role of the Midwife

All nurses and midwives have a duty of care to girls and women who have already undergone FGM, or are perceived to be at risk in the future. The Nursing and Midwifery Council’s (NMC) Code of Professional Conduct states that Nurses and Midwives in the UK must “act to identify and minimise risk to patients and clients”. 43 It is also part of the health professional’s role to work within a multidisciplinary team; collaborating with teachers, social services and the police if necessary.
