Taking Action

In 2011, the UK government issued Multi-Agency Practice Guidelines on Female Genital Mutilation for England and Wales. This document aimed to provide consistent advice to professionals who may come across this practice such as Doctors, Midwives, Police and Social Services in order to fulfil their responsibility to protect vulnerable women and children. 42 Clinical guidelines on FGM are also available from the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists – Female genital mutilation and its management, Green-top Guideline No. 53. 15

Aims :

  • To identify and appropriately respond to girls or women who may be at risk of FGM
  • To identify and appropriately respond to girls or women who have been subjected to FGM
  • To take steps towards preventing and eliminating the practice of FGM
