Many health complications can develop as a result of FGM which vary according to the severity of the procedure, with type III causing the highest morbidity due to being a more extensive surgery. 86% of 86 women seen at a London specialist clinic in one year, who had undergone type III FGM, reported experiencing both acute and chronic complications to varying degrees. 31
Another study carried out in South-West Nigeria found that 67% of 522 women had complications following FGM, such as heavy bleeding, severe pain, fever, labial adhesion and urinary incontinence.
